چکیده
The accurate representation of precipitation across the Earth’s surface is crucial to furthering our knowledge and understanding Earth System its component processes. Precipitation poses a number challenges, particularly due variability over time space whether it falls as snow or rain. While conventional measures are reasonably good at location their measurement, distribution uneven with some regions having no measurements. Spaceborne sensors have capability providing regular observations that can provide estimates precipitation. However, estimation from satellite not necessarily straightforward. Visible and/or infrared techniques rely upon imprecise cloud-top relationships, while sensitivity passive microwave different types consistent. Rain observations with a vertically looking Micro Rain Radar (MRR)
Measurements of rain were obtained with a vertically pointing micro radar (MRR) with 1 min time resolution and 50(100) m height resolution at the German Baltic coast on the Zingst peninsula (54.43°N, 12.67°E). The comparison with a conventional rain gauge (30 min integration time) for a fi ve months summer period show a correlation coeffi cient of r = 0.87 for the rainrate and agreement within ...
متن کاملIce-phase Precipitation Retrievals over Land Using Combined Radar / Radiometer Satellite Observations
Passive microwave (PMW) measurements of ice-phase precipitation, such as snowfall and graupel, provide a physically direct basis for inferring the integrated amount of precipitation within a given field-of-view (FOV), assuming that other sources of noise can be adequately accounted for. However, the vertical distribution of precipitation within the FOV is generally unknown. By combining passive...
متن کاملCloud radar observations of precipitation
An innovative method for the observation of vertical air motion and raindrop size distribution in precipitation using a 94-GHz Doppler radar is demonstrated in this paper. The method is particularly appealing since it is based on fundamental physics, the scattering of microwave radiation by large particles (Mie scattering). Observations from stratiform rain are presented to illustrate the poten...

This paper illustrates how multiple scattering signatures affect Global Precipitation Measuring (GPM) Mission Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) Ku and Ka band reflectivity measurements and how they are consistent with prelaunch assessments based on theoretical considerations and confirmed by airborne observations. In particular, in the presence of deep convection, certain characteristics...
متن کاملPrecipitation estimation over radar gap areas based on satellite and adjacent radar observations
Continuous rainfall measurements from groundbased radars are crucial for monitoring and forecasting heavy rainfall-related events such as floods and landslides. However, complete coverage by ground-based radars is often hampered by terrain blockage and beam-related errors. In this study, we presented a method to fill the radar gap using surrounding radar-estimated precipitation and observations...
